guided visit

A member of the learning team takes your students through the museum using a silent guide system (mic & earphones). This keeps your group visit uninterrupted by others, creating the feeling of an exclusive tour. The guided tour takes one hour, but be sure to leave some time afterwards to explore the museum on your own.

BOOK

the Great War

This workshop explores some of the museum's themes in depth. Posters, photographs, objects and testimonies raise questions and point to answers. What is propaganda and how does it work? How did the use of weapons develop, and what role did scientists play? And (how) is peace worked for today?

war and trauma

Images, testimonies and objects trace the evolution of medical care in wartime. The improvisation and chaos of the early period contrasts sharply with the later industrial nature of war. Weapons were perfected to exact even more misery and to aim at the complete destruction of society. In addition to the kinds of physical injury sustained, this workshop discusses the psychological effects of war both on soldiers and civilians.

the Salient Illustrated

The British cartoonist Dave Chisholm produced a large landscape illustration of the Ypres Salient northern battlefield. A hundred iconic soldiers -all doing their bit- vividly establish the war situation. In the midst of the scenery is the authentic and preserved site of Yorkshire Trench & Dugout.

In the afternoon, the imaginary interpretation is brought back to reality using historical photographs, eyewitness accounts and archaeological finds.

from front to hospital

When it became clear that the war would claim many victims, the organisation of the medical service became better and more institutionalized. Images, witness accounts and objects make this evolution understandable.

To a large extent, the medical effort was also a matter of transport. Wounded were ferried from the battlefield to hospitals in the rear via intermediate aid stations. Cemeteries along these evacuation routes are their silent witnesses.

your Flanders fields

In close cooperation with the learning team, a program focusing specifically on your group can be devised. Your school's Roll of Honour undoubtedly is linked to the museum's List of Names. Family members or inhabitants of your home town probably found their way into Flanders fields before you. These men's wartime fortune nowadays can become your guide through the area.

A thus personalised day trip requires careful and timely preparation. In this respect, or when you consider to contribute to the ongoing research that underpins the List of Names, please contact the learning team.

city at war

From mid-October 1914 Ypres was continuously shelled. Hundreds of inhabitants and dozens of aid workers had to cope in difficult circumstances. Later the civilian population was forced to leave and Ypres became a large military centre on the way to and from the front. During this city walk, soldiers and civilians who wrote down their experiences are listened to and engaged with.

bike ride

The lie of the land played a central role in trench warfare. Small or large differences in elevation determined whether one saw or was seen. Cycling is the ideal way to experience these fluctations up close. From March to October, a suitable route can be worked out for you – with or without a picnic stop along the way.

ghost in a bottle

Despite being forbidden by international agreements, warfare made use of chemical weapons. Ypres is where poison gas was used for the first time in history on 22 April 1915. On tour in the area where this happened, testimonies from soldiers and civilians speak of this weapon that spared nothing and no one.

great war, little peaces

At Christmas 1914, soldiers came out of their trenches to meet in no man's land. Foes found they had more in common than differences. In the years that followed there were no more Xmas truces, but there were still many smaller peaceful events.

a multicultural war

The war brought people from all over the world to Flanders. Even if they were allies in the conflict, they were not always treated equally. They also brought their own cultural and religious customs. As a result, the locals often distrusted them, living together was not evident, and racism was common.
