LOUISE/EDITH: held in high esteem

One hundred years ago, on 22 November 1922, Louise De Hem died. Born in 1866, this artist from Ypres was very succesful in the late 19th century with her stunning portraits and pastels paintings. She made a professional and international career for herself, which was not a given for women in those days. The name Louise De Hem would later disappear between the pleats of history, as was the fate of many female artists. Thanks to her sister Hélène's bequest, the Yper Museum owns the largest public collection of De Hems. Her oeuvre takes centre stage here today. We have put others in charge of curating this exhibiton. Eleven 17-year-olds selected the works, took care of the scenography and created their own art inspired by the world of Louise. 

Contemporary artist and Artist in Residence Edith Dekyndt made a new work 100 years later. Louise's and Edith's lives seem connected somehow and it is as if this duo exhibition was meant to be. Born in Ypres, an international career, a life in Brussels and a fascination with hands and the ageing process. Two artists from Ypres.  Held in high esteem.
