About

Arthur Vincent Leopold Hull was born in 1885 to Walter and Rose Hull of Moama, New South Wales, Australia. Known as ‘Stid’ to family and friends, Hull was the eldest of nine brothers and sisters. He attended Echuca Grammar School in Moama and then became a farmer in his native region.

In February 1915, Hull enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) and left Sydney in June that year with the 18th Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F. for Egypt and then to the front on the Gallipoli peninsula in early August 1915.

After evacuation from Gallipoli and further training in Egypt, Hull went to France in March 1916 and was deployed to the Somme near Pozières. Because of his efforts and accomplishments, including as a signalman, at the front in France, his commanding officer sent him to England for officer training at the New College at Oxford. In May 1917, he was appointed second lieutenant and in September he rejoined the 18th Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Shortly afterwards, the focus shifted from France to Flanders, where the third Battle of Ypres was in full battle.

In early October 1917, Hull received the news that he had been promoted to lieutenant. Less than a week later, he was killed on 9 October 1917 near what is now Tyne Cot Cemetery, during the Battle of Poelkapelle. Arthur Vincent Leopold Hull was buried at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery (VIII.D.19).

This commemoration is attended by relatives from Australia of the fallen following their visit to Flanders Fields.

We hope the Viff's will be able to attend this ceremony in numbers.
