The guided walks take you through the city and confront you with the lasting witnesses of war history. Discover the story of the First World War through the city's main war memorials.

Ypres and World War One

During this walk the guide takes the group to the main WWI sites in the centre of Ypres. The moving Menin Gate, the Irish Cross and the sober Saint Georges Memorial Church are vivid witnesses of the war past in the city. In between the WWI sites, the story of the war and the reconstruction is illustrated. This walk is an excellent introduction to your the visit of the In Flanders Fields Museum.

bicycle tours

The cycling tours are entirely devoted to the 'visible' relics in the landscape of the First World War around Ypres. You follow the arched front line, also marked by the newly planted memorial trees, which remained almost the same during the war years around the centre of Ypres. Bicycles need to be provided by the group itself.

Northern Salient

This cycle tour starts at the Grote Markt after which it goes via the Ieperlee canal in the direction of Essex Farm Cemetery, the place where John McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields. It then continues towards Carrefour des Roses, Yorkshire Trench & Dug Out and Wieltje, ending with a visit to the French cemetery of Saint Charles de Potyze.

Eastern Salient

Starting at the Grote Markt, this cycle tour will take you to the eastern part of the Ypres Salient. It will first take you to the French cemetery Saint- Charles de Potyze, after which you continue your tour via the Begijnenbosstraat towards 't Hooge and Hill 62, to then finish via Zillebekevijver.

Southern Salient

You start this bike tour via the Grote Markt and first head towards Zillebekevijver. Then you will visit Hill 60, the last piece of authentic battlefield in Flanders, and then continue via the Caterpillar, the Palingbeek, The Bluff and the Sint-Elooi crater. Finally, Bedford House Cemetery is visited, one of the largest Commomwealth cemeteries in the area.

battlefield tours

The bus tours searching for traces of the Great War take you to the story of the Great War using traces that can still be found in the landscape. On these tours you will see Ypres from these telling places in the landscape. The group has to provide its own bus transport.

Salient Hightlights

This tour brings you the highlights of the three entry points, North, East and South. From the North entry point you will also take a short walk to the Yorkshire Trench; a restored British trench system. Via a few small cemeteries you will go to East entry point, next to the Hooge Crater Museum, where Bellewaerde Ridge is illuminated. The route continues via the valuable Hill 60 site and the immense crater, Caterpillar. Entry point South is located in the De Palingbeek provincial domain and offers an insight into the underground war from Hill 60 to Sint-Elooi.

Northern Salient

During this tour you will get acquainted with the gas attack of 1915 that took place in the northern part of the Ypres Salient. The tour starts with a visit to Essex Farm Cemetery and the restored dressing station where John McCrae worked. This Canadian doctor wrote the famous poem In Flanders Fields. Via the German cemetery in Langemark we drive to the largest British cemetery Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendaele. Via Zonnebeke and the French cemetery Saint-Charles de Potyze the journey ends in the direction of Ypres.

Southern Salient

This tour through the southern part of the front line starts at the restored site of Hill 60, the last piece of authentic battlefield in Flanders. The journey continues via the Peace Tower in the Irish Park of Messines, a beacon in the landscape that wishes to commemorate the sacrifice of the Irish people, both Catholics and Protestants. In Ploegsteert the impressive missing persons memorial and cemetery will be visited, after which the journey ends via Bedford House Cemetery, one of the largest Commonwealth cemeteries in the region.
